TITAN – Fighting disinformation with intelligent coaching
Flow of information is changing, and it has consequences. TITAN will together with citizens develop a system to enhance critical thinking.
When was the last time you shared some kind of news or information? Social media and other information technologies, such as apps, has fundamentally changed how we consume information and news. With a single click on the mouse, it is possible to share an article or some news. Some individuals and organizations are taken advantages of this and use it to purposely spread false information. This phenomenon is called disinformation which, unlike misinformation, is a term for the spread of completely or partially false information, which is deliberately created to harm a person, social group, an organisation or a Country.
Disinformation is increasingly becoming a problem and the potential damage to democratic institutions demands that we as a society must actively fight back against it. One way to fight disinformation is by avoiding that it is shared. The question is how to distinguish between what is factual information and what is not? In order to do so, we must be sufficiently capable of assess and evaluate the information that we encounter in our everyday life. A lot of tools have been developed for professional fact-checkers, but there are none aimed for ordinary citizens to use. TITAN wants to change this.
Developing new intelligence with the engagement of citizens
The TITAN-project runs from September 2022 until august 2025 and will through the three years develop an AI-based system that will coach citizens to make their own, reflected assessments of information. With the fully developed TITAN-system European citizens will be in possession of a tool that will strengthen them in their combat against being misguided by false information, that is being spread by different organizations or individuals.
Co-creation is an essential part of the development of TITAN, and The Danish Board of Technology is responsible for the entire co-creation process that take place across Europe. The aim of the co-creation is to ensure that TITAN will be developed in accordance with the European citizens’ wishes and values, and additionally accommodate some of the worries that are associated with the use of artificial intelligence. TITAN will center around user-driven innovation and ensure that AI-technologies are created from a human-centered point of view.
