Engagement of young people in UN decisions on biodiversity
In 2021, a new global agreement on biodiversity is to be adopted at a UN summit on biodiversity. The agreement must set out objectives for the protection of the planet's ecosystems. The Danish Board of Technology has been one of the main forces behind the development of a Toolkit, which will help young people to become part of the ongoing negotiations.
TheDanish Board of Technology has been one of the main forces behind the Toolkit “Together Towards a Global Deal“, because we want the young people to be involved in the debate about the climate. The toolkit has been developed for young people in connection with the discussion on biodiversity until a UN summit that takes place in China this year.
Take the debate with the rest of the world
At the Danish Board of Technology, we believe that it is important to constantly work on how it is possible to involve as many citizens in global decision-making processes as possible. The method should be further developed for the future engagement of young people in, for example, UN summits, which can be done by including elements of World Wide Views that enable the collection and comparison of results throughout the world and with other young people in any other country. This way, it will be possible for young people to discuss differences and similarities with these, at the same workshop. And for decision makers to see how young people in different parts of the world relate to the political choices they have to make. The Danish Board of Technologu is also a co-initiator of two global citizen meetings on genetic modification and climate.
Opportunity to contribute
The toolkit was developed back in 2019, before we had Corona to think about as well, when the UN summit for 2020 was to be planned. The aim is to motivate and support young people, youth organizations and other relevant groups of young people, in facilitating discussions on biodiversity, ecosystems and sustainable consumption. Biodiversity is high on the agenda, as it has a major impact on the future of young people, which is why it is particularly important to give them the opportunity to contribute to the decision-making process.
Developed in collaboration
The toolkit and the accompanying manual have been developed in collaboration between Bjørn Bedsted (Danish Board of Technology), Christian Prip (Fridtjof Nansen Institute), Thor Hjarsen (WWF Denmark) and Mette Gervin Damsgaard (Nordic Council). It is based on experiences from the Danish Board of Technologys World Wide Views projects. The toolkit, which is also based on the latest research and IPBES report, also contains a guide that can be used for organizing workshops.
